Foyle Search and Rescue are delighted to announce that there is a new public defibrillator fitted in the City. The de-fib has been fitted on the wall of the apartments at the walk way between Waterside House and Train station.
Stephen Twells, Chairman of Foyle Search and Rescue said, “A donation was made to Foyle Search and Rescue in the latter part of last year in memory of the late Paul McCauley, who was a volunteer with FSR. The family wished for the donation to be used for a piece of equipment that would benefit not only our volunteers on patrol but the city as a whole. After internal discussion and liaising with the family it was agreed that there was need for a de-fib at Waterside House”.
Pat Carlin, First Aid Officer for Foyle Search and Rescue said “A defibrillator is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. Anyone who needs to access the defibrillator in an emergency calls 999 and the operator will give them a key code to open the box. The defibrillator can be used by anybody and gives the operator verbal instructions how to use it.
Stephen Twells commented, “Having access to defibrillators in the community is vital and we feel honoured to be presented with this life saving piece of equipment. Hopefully, we can help raise the awareness throughout the city of the importance of knowing where Community Defibrillators are located and also the awareness for CPR training. We would also like to give a special thanks to Niall Doran of City Centre Initiative who with his help, support and knowledge got this de-fib fitted at this location. ”
